“You are not yet a Leader until
you have a successor”. #QuoteMe
Who actually is a Successor?
- Do you think a successor is someone you just put to fill that Leadership position to take your place?
- Or a successor is just that person whom you choose to assume your position while you oversee the affairs and correct errors?
- Or you think a successor is that person you choose to lead the others in the group/forum/club?
Who
then is a Successor?
As a leader, there are so many
responsibilities accrued to you. Ranging from directing and managing the
affairs of your followers, finding solutions to problems, taking the blame if
anything goes wrong, motivating your followers, seeing to the well-being of
your followers, discipline, etc.
But as a leader, your work is
more than these. Your main work as a
Leader is to raise Leaders. If you are taking the lead position in a
particular place (leading the people) and you are only working on what you’re
to do. i.e., your primary assignment, without giving attention to the affairs
of individuals, your work is not complete. In other words, if you’re doing your
work, that’s good; as that is what you’re to do as you’re occupying that position
but when you are not seeing to the affairs of your followers so they can also
attain a great position, your work is not complete.
What I’m saying in essence is
that as a leader, you must raise everyone to be a leader. Apart from that, from
the Leaders you will raise, you should choose someone to be their head (The
Successor). Your successor should not just be someone to take your position and
lead the others but MUST DO A DOUBLE OF WHAT YOU DID WHILE YOU WERE TAKING THE
LEAD.
In other words, in choosing
your successor, teach, direct and inspire him. Let him do things you didn’t do
and more than what you did. Leave a footpath for the followers to follow even
while training them to be leaders. Teach your successor to attain those heights
you weren’t able to achieve because, teach him to accomplish more than what you
accomplished. Let there be a double output of accomplishment through your
successor.
That is who a successor is. Of
course, the first three definitions I gave earlier on whom people think is a
successor, they are correct but the definition is more than that.
A successor is someone who
attains a leadership position and acquired intuition from his Forerunner (coupled
with the ones he had) and used them to lead the leaders (followers; I call them
leaders as the forerunner had raised leaders before handing over), accomplish greater
heights, and achieve even more than what his forerunner could accomplish.
You see, according to the law
of retrospection, before a building can be firm, the foundation has to be
solid. If the founder of an organization does his work well and hands over to
the his successor; the successor does the same and more than that; he hands
over to the next and the next, to the next and on and on, and they all did more
than what their predecessor did, the organization will be solidly solid.
Looking at it; Founder > 1st
successor (good) > 2nd successor (better) > 3rd Successor (great) > 4th Successor (greater) > and so on.
